Topps Fright Flicks Trading Cards

In 1988, Topps released a 90 card, 11 sticker set entitled Fright Flicks. Each card featured a photograph from one of 14 horror movies of the previous 10 years, with a humorous caption beneath it. The card backs featured frightening "Did It Ever Happen?" urban legends, which told a Twilight Zone-like tale in 100 words or less. The stickers poked similar fun, with puzzle pieces on their backs. The set was a "modern" version of Topps' Creature Features set from 1973, which featured Universal movie monster film stills with funny and punny captions below them. The template for both of these sets goes back to 1959 with the Funny Monsters set, which featured drawings of monsters in various situations with a joke caption underneath.

Here's a full list of films showcased in the set:
  • Alien (1979)
  • Aliens (1986)
  • An American Werewolf in London (1981)
  • Day of the Dead (1985)
  • The Fly (1986)
  • Fright Night (1985)
  • Ghostbusters (1984)
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985)
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
  • Poltergeist (1982)
  • Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986)
  • Predator (1987)
  • Pumpkinhead / Vengeance: The Demon (1988) - some cards listed under the Vengeance alternate title.
Ghostbusters photographs are featured on five of the cards and one of the stickers, plus the sticker back puzzle. All of the images below have been scanned in by me (Paul Rudoff) from my personal collection and are presented at a large resolution of 1000x1400. Very neat! I had the stickers to form the big puzzle, and the Slimer sticker I believe, but I never had the other cards with GB images. I wonder how I managed to miss them.

Hi there, I was doing some cleaning/purging while in ’stay safe at home’ orders are in place and I came across a binder that I had created with sleeve protectors and had all 90 cards and 11 stickers in them…in mint condition. Gosh, I must have put this together back in the late 80’s or early 90’s.

Is there really any value in these? I’m sure if there is, it wouldn’t be much. But other than holding onto them for sentimental value of a non quarantined time, I see no reason to hold onto them.

I value your thoughts.
Thanks
Ed
