Welcome to Spook Central's continuing Return of Shot on Site Summer event wherein we take a look at all of the filming locations for Paul Feig's 2016 Ghostbusters (aka Ghostbusters: Answer The Call). Every Sunday - henceforth dubbed Shot on Site Sundays - at Noon (Eastern) for several weeks (all parts available here in reverse order), we will go through the entire movie from start to finish telling and showing you where everything was filmed in or around Boston, Massachusetts; with a great deal of quick shots in Manhattan, New York; and one spot in Los Angeles, California. We will be utilizing the Theatrical and Extended cuts of the movie from the Blu-ray, as that provides the most locations than just the Theatrical Cut alone. With that in mind, SPOILER WARNING if you read any further... though I suspect that whomever wants to see the movie already has, and those who want to avoid it won't care. Those in the latter camp have probably stopped reading this post already. That's cool. There's lots of material on Spook Central about the original movies and animated series for you to look at.

The majority of locations were identified and researched by Matthew Jordan back in 2016, way before anyone else did it. Secondary thanks go to all of the fine folks on the internet who documented the filming of the movie in 2015, which helped in Matt's research. A few locations were identified by me (Paul Rudoff) and MrMichaelT. The title graphic seen at the top was created by Matthew Jordan, based on an idea by Paul Rudoff. Now that that's out of the way, let us continue...

After a seemingly endless search, they find the ghost and follow it to the main area of the theater, where they put it in a can.

That would be the main area of the Wang Theater, of course.

Skipping over a bunch of story that doesn't present us with any new locations... The newly-christened "Ghostbusters" find themselves brought in for questioning by the FBI after skeptic Martin Heiss is thrown from the window of their second-floor headquarters. As a scene transition, there's a skyline shot that gives us our third appearance of the Manhattan Municipal Building.

They arrive outside City Hall to meet with the mayor.

Image

Unlike the original Ghostbusters, which used an exterior shot of the real City Hall, this movie uses the building behind it. It's the Tweed Courthouse at 52 Chambers Street in Manhattan. If the camera panned over a few feet to the left, you'd also see the Municipal Building down the block/across the street. Yeah, you know which shots they filmed on the same day :-)

After talking with the mayor and his georgeous aide, the FBI agents bring them back to Zhu's, and then depart.

Image

As the agents depart, we get to see some of the shops down the block from "Zhu's" at the corner of Harrison Avenue & Beach Street. Although the filmmakers changed the street signs to resemble those in New York's Chinatown - Harrison became "Mulberry Street" and Beach became "Canal Street" - they didn't touch those on the buildings. If you click on the image above and look at the full-screen Blu-ray image, you can see that the awning of the "Vietnamese Sandwich" shop on the right says "66 Harrison Ave." on it. Oops! Also, the political ads on the coffee shop were real. If you think all of the blank space under "Michelle" looks awkward, it's because the original sign actually read, "Michelle For Boston". They digitally erased the "For Boston" part for obvious reasons.

After figuring out that the ley lines meet at the Mercado, the gang heads there, giving us another driving scene!

They're driving in Manhattan on 7th Avenue heading south, passing Cafe Metro on West 54th Street.

After the team visits Rowan at the Mercado (a really fancy set) and are fake-arrested, the Extended Cut presents a new scene in which Erin is confronted by a blogger.

The event happens in front of 100 Federal Street in Boston. We'll be in this area a little later when the ghostly parade baloons appear.

Getting bad publicity for punching the blogger in the face, a dejected Erin retreats to her apartment.

Image

It is a pure miracle that this location was able to be identified because there's really nothing in the shot to help. Her apartment can be found at 310 West 106th Street/Duke Ellington Blvd in Manhattan. Go pay her a visit the next time you're in the area. Tell her Paul sent ya!

Does Erin ever come out of her apartment? With some reading material and a new Netflix account, will she even need to? Find out next week - same ghost time, same ghost channel - when we continue our look at the filming locations from Ghostbusters (2016).
