Ghostbusters: Afterlife Delayed - Yet Again - To November 2021

I'm really starting to think that I should save a template of this post to re-post every few months, as I've now written this same thing on March 31, 2020 and (exactly three months ago) on October 21, 2020.

In what has now become something of a sick running joke, Sony has just announced via Deadline that the theatrical release date of Ghostbusters: Afterlife had been moved for the THIRD TIME to November 11, 2021.

This is what happens when the studios rely on the outdated theatrical release model in the day and age of streaming, 4K Ultra HD, and giant Ultra High-Definition televisions. I really have no idea why people still like to go to crowded, noisy theaters; sit in uncomfortable seats; and pay almost as much (if not more) as the Blu-ray and 4K releases that will inevitably come out a mere three months later (WITH bonus features!) just to watch a one-time-only streaming rental of a movie that they can't pause or have any sort of playback control over.

At least Wonder Woman 1984 fans got to see their movie already.

Well, come on. Watching a movie in the cinema is an experience, an event. Watching it at home just isn’t the same, no matter how high tech your equipment is. I have seen lots and lots of movies in the cinema and I remember every single one of them (incl. where I watched it, who was with me and if I enjoyed it).

I think they should have kept the summer date. If 2020 is any indication for the course of 2021 infection rates will be at their low in June-September allowing cinemas to open. But just like 2020 they’ll probably have to stick to reruns of classics, some indies and maybe that one major flick everyone’s talking about (like Tenet last year).
