Coasty Marshmallow - 80's Breakfast Cereal Drink Coasters Review

R.D. Reynolds, the creator of Wrestlecrap, runs an Etsy shop under the name Coasty Marshmallow. The shop is filled with pop culture drink coasters, mainly focusing on things from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. As expected, Ghostbusters shows up in two sets of coasters. I just purchased one of those sets: 80's Breakfast Cereal Drink Coasters Set of 8, which features Slimer! and The Real Ghostbusters cereal.

For $15.00 (with free U.S. shipping, though Etsy charges sales tax), the set includes eight drink coasters emblazoned with the box artwork for these licensed cereals: G.I. Joe Action Stars, Slimer! and The Real Ghostbusters, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Batman (1989 movie), Mr. T, Nintendo Cereal System, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. I remember eating a lot of these, surely, unhealthy foodstuffs when I was a wee little lad in the 1980s. Some I remember more than others. I still have some of the Ghostbusters cereal boxes, including the one used here. (My large raw cereal box and lenticular card scans are a Patreon-exclusive.) I remember buying the Batman cereal in the Summer of 1989 with a Batman bust bank shrink-wrapped to the outside of the box. I believe the Nintendo cereal came out around the same time as the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. I don't have any memory of the G.I. Joe and E.T. cereals, but that doesn't mean that I never ate them. I have to admit, I haven't thought of many of these cereals until I got these coasters. They sure do bring back some nice memories.

Obviously, this is not an officially-licensed product, but that should be obvious since most product on Etsy is home-made/fan-made. I have no qualms about that. The quality is quite good. Each coaster is roughly 3.75"x3.75" and printed on hard plastic (some kind of vinyl or PVC material) that the shop claims "will not fade, scratch, or break". The cereal box printing is raised a little bit, which gives it a bit of an embossed feel. While the print quality is not razor-sharp, it is very good and I am pleased with it. There is a slight white border at the top and bottom (the box art does not go right to the edge), and the extra space on the left and right is filled with cereal bowl clip art. There is a slight lip on the edge of the coaster. The back of each coaster is plain white.

The Coasty Marshmallow shop banner proclaims, "Free Secret Coaster With Every Order!" My free secret coaster is the Coasty Marshmallow Man dressed as a witch, sitting in a cauldron filled with candy corn. Since this is my first order, I don't know if everyone gets the same coaster, or if it's random. It was signed on the back, "Thanks! RD"

[UPDATE - 8/20/2020]
I received an e-mail from R.D., who told me a little more about the secret coasters: "As for the random secret coasters, right now since it is leading into Halloween, we're doing mostly (but not only) Coasty in the witch hat. That changes though, as we've done tons of more obscure stuff, and just throw one in with each order. Here are a few (but by no means all) of those we've done:"

Currently, there is one other coaster set that features Ghostbusters. The Classic NES Horror Video Game Drink Coasters Set of 8, priced at $16.00, features the "New York News" newspaper screen from the ending of Activision's Ghostbusters II NES game.

Also, those of you who are fans of Kurt Fuller (Jack Hardemeyer in Ghostbusters II), may be interested in the No Holds Barred Drink Coasters Set of 10, which features him as Mr. Brell. As with most of the sets, it's priced at $15.00.

Overall, I was pleased with the coaster set. If I had any complaints, it's that $15 is about double the price I feel a coaster set is worth. RD has many great sets, and at $15 each, it'll break your bank account to buy a lot of them - even with the 20% off discount for orders of three or more sets. I'll try to get the other two sets that I noted in this review, and if I do, I'll gladly write reviews of them in the future.

All three coaster set photos were taken from the Coasty Marshmallow store, and fixed up by me. Any other photos are my own. This item was purchased by me, Paul Rudoff, using my own money. It was NOT provided by the seller for review on this site.
