Spook Central Patreon Page Opens

The Spook Central Patreon page has just been launched. Read on to find out what it's all about...

Next month is Spook Central's 23rd anniversary. When I first launched the site back in August of 1996, I never would have imagined that it would still be going over two decades later. A large part of Spook Central's long run has been due to the gracious support from Raffaele Ruffaldi, who has given the site a home for the past 15 or so years. While that has helped sustain the site, it doesn't solve everything.

Over these past 23 years, I have spent more hours working on Spook Central than I have in all of the real-life jobs I've ever had combined. In spite of this, the site doesn't provide me with any income. Unlike the rest of the internet, or even other Ghostbusters sites, I've never once ran ads on the site - aside from the Amazon links and the occasional pimping of stuff for myself (Spook Central store, eBay stuff) or for friends (free advertising, as I've never charged my friends). None of that brings in the big bucks. If I'm lucky, I'll get $10 from Amazon every few months, and maybe I'll sell one item on eBay in any given month.

After seeing the success that Ghostbusters News and Wrestlecrap are having with Patreon, I figured this may be a good way to get Spook Central to support itself, in a manner of speaking. Thus, there is now an official Spook Central Patreon page.

The Spook Central Patreon page features a two-tiered system. The first tier is called Print Is Dead, and is available for patrons who support Spook Central for $5.95 or more per month. You're probably wondering why I had to set such a weirdly-priced minimum. $0.96 of that amount goes to Patreon as part of the THREE FEES they charge creators. (The Patreon Fee Calculator states a penny less than what Patreon actually takes.) Patreon takes two cuts right off the top of your donation. (Their third fee comes when it's time for them to put the money in my bank or PayPal accounts.) If the Spook Central Patreon page turns out to be a success, I will look into lowering the tier minimum. I can assure you that I won't raise it.

Supporters in the Print Is Dead tier get early access to articles before they are posted to the Spook Central website, as well as exclusive content. The exclusive content will also include "bonus materials" from some of the Spook Central articles. I'm starting off small with the exclusive content. Right now, there's the PKE Meter Sticker Book, an eBook PDF of the tiny sticker book featuring really cool 1980's-inspired Ghostbusters stickers that came with the Running Press Mini P.K.E. Meter Deluxe Mega Kit a few months ago. These next three Fridays (July 26th, August 2nd and 9th) will feature three out-of-print albums in high-quality 320kbps MP3s: The Real Ghostbusters soundtrack album, and the Lincoln and Varese Sarabande releases of Elmer Bernstein's Ghostbusters score. More stuff will follow over the months and years ahead.

Supporters in the Physical Media Is Not Dead get exclusive access to the Disc Preservation Project, plus everything in the Print Is Dead tier. I have a small collection of DVDs that were never commercially-released or are long out-of-print, which I will convert into disc image files (.iso format) that will be part of this project. Since there is a finite amount in the collection, the idea would be to provide one every two to three months. Supporters in this tier will need to be able to download large files, as some of these ISOs are over 4 gigabytes large. This tier has not been launched yet, because I need to work with Raffaele on how to make it happen with the server we use. I hope to have it launched by Halloween with a set minimum of $11.56 ($1.56 goes to Patreon). The price may be reduced if the Spook Central Patreon page is a success in the interim.

Well, that about covers it. If you, my dear readers and loyal Spookies, have ideas for what else you'd like to see on the Spook Central Patreon page, please let me know.
