Welcome to Spook Central's continuing Return of Shot on Site Summer event wherein we take a look at all of the filming locations for Paul Feig's 2016 Ghostbusters (aka Ghostbusters: Answer The Call). Every Sunday - henceforth dubbed Shot on Site Sundays - at Noon (Eastern) for several weeks (all parts available here in reverse order), we will go through the entire movie from start to finish telling and showing you where everything was filmed in or around Boston, Massachusetts; with a great deal of quick shots in Manhattan, New York; and one spot in Los Angeles, California. We will be utilizing the Theatrical and Extended cuts of the movie from the Blu-ray, as that provides the most locations than just the Theatrical Cut alone. With that in mind, SPOILER WARNING if you read any further... though I suspect that whomever wants to see the movie already has, and those who want to avoid it won't care. Those in the latter camp have probably stopped reading this post already. That's cool. There's lots of material on Spook Central about the original movies and animated series for you to look at.

The majority of locations were identified and researched by Matthew Jordan back in 2016, way before anyone else did it. Secondary thanks go to all of the fine folks on the internet who documented the filming of the movie in 2015, which helped in Matt's research. A few locations were identified by me (Paul Rudoff) and MrMichaelT. The title graphic seen at the top was created by Matthew Jordan, based on an idea by Paul Rudoff. Now that that's out of the way, let us continue...

Rather than possessing someone in power, Rowan's spirit decides to posses the Ghostbusters; first Abby, then Kevin. Kevin rides away on his motorcycle, Ecto-2.

He drives down Henry Street in Manhattan, passing by Fung Choi Hair Salon at 45 Henry Street (red awning). Kevin also passed by 40 Henry Street (the red brick building on the left in the first shot), which we will see in close-up when all Hell breaks loose.

Since she couldn't warn the rest of the team, Erin decides to warn the mayor at the fancy Lotus Leaf restaurant.

The mayor was dining in The Gallery at the W Boston Hotel at 100 Stuart Street in Boston. Since the restaurant sits on the corner of Stuart and Tremont, it's directly across from the Wang Theater (aka Stonebook Theater). You can actually glimpse it behind Erin outside the window in the second shot above.

Meanwhile, Kevin is still driving back to the Mercado.

He's on 7th Avenue in Manhattan, starting at West 57th Street and then going past the Park Central Hotel at 870 7th Avenue.

Rowan breaks the barrier, while lunatic Erin runs through the streets ranting and raving.

Image

Erin is running down Walker Street towards Broadway in Manhattan. Putting aside the firehouse shoot, this seems to be the only non-driving, non-estasblishing shot footage filmed in New York. What was key to finding this was the Western Spirit store on the left, although they did move a little bit away since this was filmed in 2015. The yellow vertical "Hardware" sign (at 61 Walker Street) is still there to help seal the deal. The clothing store on the right is Unlimited Jeans, in case you were wondering...which I know you weren't.

Mass hysteria as the crowds panic in a close-up.

Image

If you look carefully, you'll see that the movie doesn't hide the address. It's the Episcopal Church at 48 Henry Street in Manhattan. You might remember Kevin driving past here earlier in the movie.

More of Erin running through the streets amongst the panicked crowds.

This shot is interesting. The location is actually at 1 Oliver Street in Boston, but the filmmakers altered the footage greatly. As you can see in the real life photo below, the "office building" on the right is actually a bank and a parking garage!

In U.S. Trailer #1, the red awnings were altered to be blue. You'll also notice that the shot below is from before the ghost effects were added.

If you need more proof, check out this behind-the-scenes shot showing the real building behind Erin.

The camera follows her as she turns the corner, and we see the ghostly Mercado from her point-of-view down the street.

Image

Since the movie matches real-life, she's looking down Milk Street in Boston, while standing at the intersection with Oliver Street and Kilby Street. As expected, there's no Mercado or omnious skyline in the background. That was all added later with a computer. By the way, if you look really closely at the movie image above, in the windows of the building on the right foreground you can read "Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates". Another in-movie clue that this was filmed in Boston. Oops.

With all Hell breaking loose, who will answer the call? Find out next week - same ghost time, same ghost channel - when we continue our look at the filming locations from Ghostbusters (2016).
