Ghostbusters: Afterlife Home Video Releases - WITH FULL DETAILS!!!

 By Paul Rudoff on Dec. 27, 2021 at 1:40 PM , Categories: Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Home Video

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just announced several home video releases of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, including a mega gift set that is sure to please all Ghostheads. Read on to find out more...

If you haven't seen the movie yet, the first 10 minutes have been uploaded to the official Ghostbusters YouTube channel, so take a little time and watch it.

Unless stated otherwise, all of these home video releases will be released in the United States on February 1, 2022. Some of this stuff will be released in other countries, perhaps in different configurations, possibly on different dates. I won't get into that because it's enough work just trying to focus on the U.S. stuff.

PRE-ORDER: 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD.

The 4K release will contain two discs (UHD & Blu-ray), as will the Blu-ray (Blu-ray & DVD). Of course, the DVD release will be a single disc. The 4K UHD release uses fan art by artist Richard Philpott that Jason Reitman loved on Twitter. Here are the movie specs, as provided by the press release:

Run Time: 124 minutes
Rating: PG-13
4K Ultra HD: Feature: 2160p Ultra High Definition 2.40:1 | Audio: 5.1 Dolby Atmos (Dolby True HD 7.1 compatible)
Blu-ray: Feature: 1080p High Definition 2.40:1 | Audio: 5.1 Dolby Digital
DVD: Feature: 2.40:1 Anamorphic Widescreen | Audio: 5.1 Dolby Digital

The Blu-ray disc will have the special features listed below, as per the press release. The DVD will only contain the "Summoning the Spirit" featurette. (4K discs don't usually carry special features, leaving the included Blu-ray disc to carry the load.)
  • We Got One! Easter Eggs Revealed (preview)
  • Ghostbusters: A Look Back
  • A Look Ahead
  • Bringing Ecto-1 Back to Life (preview)
  • The Gearhead's Guide to Ghostbusters Gadgets
  • Special Effects: The Ghosts of Afterlife
  • Deleted Scene: Is It Ever Too Late?
  • Summoning the Spirit: Making Ghostbusters: Afterlife (preview)
Sony uploaded a sizzle reel promoting these special features.

PRE-ORDER: Blu-ray, DVD.

These "3-Movie Collection" releases contain the three related movies, leaving out the unrelated 2016 film. [Ghostbusters (2016) is like the James Bond film Casino Royale (1967). It's an official spoof of the real thing, bearing the name of the real thing, but it's not a part of the official series.] I have been told by my contact at Sony that each will be three discs. So, thankfully, it won't have that re-authored "movies only" Double Feature disc for the first two movies. However, my contact didn't state if any of the three movies will have special features. Afterlife probably will, as it will undoubtedly be the same DVD that is also being sold separately. I will be curious as to what DVD of the first two movies will be included. Will it be those horrible 2005 DVDs (since Sony retired the 1999 DVDs), or will they finally author new DVDs of the first two movies using the new movie transfers they have done since the last DVD releases in 2005? (UPDATE: My contact at Sony confirms that these sets will used the existing pre-2019 discs for the original two films; no new Ghostbusters 1&2 DVDs or Blu-rays were made for these sets.) If any of you pick up either of these "3-Movie Collection" releases, please let us know what the situation is.

PRE-ORDER: 4K/Blu-ray.

From the press release: "Featuring Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II and Ghostbusters: Afterlife on 4K Ultra HD & Blu-ray, plus two discs full of special features! Includes over 20 hours of rare behind-the-scenes and must-see archival gems, including the full Preview Cut of the original movie and much, much more! Presented in collectible "ghost trap" packaging with lights, and includes a full 220-page reprint of the rare 1985 "Making Ghostbusters" book! Also includes digital versions of Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife."

If you missed the small detail: THE GHOST TRAP PACKAGING HAS LIGHTS! Also, for some reason, a digital copy of the unrelated 2016 spoof is being included, which should placate those weird people who were pissed off that it was being left out of this set. The press release doesn't state whether the Making Ghostbusters book will be scaled down a little bit from the original size (around 8.5"x11", if I remember correctly) to better fit with the movie cases (about 5.25"x6.5"), or if it will be "full size". I guess we'll have to wait until I have the product in hand to find out. (UPDATE: My contact at Sony confirms that the book has been scaled down to fit the packaging.) Also, this release is why Sony came to me this past Summer to ask for scans of the "Making Ghostbusters" book. You're welcome.

The product photo shows us that each pair of discs will be in their own case:

* Case #1: Ghostbusters (1984) on 4K UHD & Blu-ray
* Case #2: Ghostbusters II (1989) on 4K UHD & Blu-ray
* Case #3: Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) on 4K UHD & Blu-ray
* Case #4: Special Features Blu-ray Disc 1 & 2

Originally I thought that five of the discs would be the same as the 2019 Steelbook set. The press release gives us the list of special features below, and as you can see, only the Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II 4K & Blu-ray discs seem to be the same. BOTH of the Special Features discs are new.

It does seem like we are getting the raw dailies that were shown at the 2019 Fanfest, along with a lot of new stuff, including some things I have always hoped we would get: the full TV Cut of the films and the "114-minute Preview Cut" of the film. The latter is, undoubtedly, the "first cut" (dated February 17, 1984) on the Betamax tape editor Sheldon Kahn found that is on display at GhostCorps headquarters. No surprise, then, that Kahn is providing optional commentary on it with Joe Medjuck. (UPDATE: I was able to confirm with GhostCorps that this Betamax tape is INDEED the source of the preview cut.) I hope this is the "workprint version" that was used for those deleted scenes back in 1999. We're also, finally, getting the lions share of Ghostbusters II deleted scenes with a whopping 19 new ones! I hope Sherman Tully is one of them. The Reelz Channel's Behind Closed Doors special is also included, as well as the Dana audition tapes, of which we only saw a couple of snippets of in the Cleanin' Up The Town documentary.

I'd also like to point out a few other things that are easily overlooked: The deleted scene count for the first film is given at 16; the 2019 set has 17 scenes. (UPDATE: My contact at Sony confirms that the "Central Park Bums Raw Takes" has been moved to a new "Dailies" section, which makes sense as it's not really a deleted scene in and of itself.) Ruth Oliver's Library Ghost Scream Test from the Criterion laserdisc has finally been resurrected. (Only a handful of "exclusives" left on that set, including the hundreds of still photos.) The last item is "Theatrical Trailers & Promo"; the "& Promo" part intrigues me. When I consulted with Sony on the 2019 set, I was telling them of things to find. There were a couple of things I remembered too late, such as the 1999 DVD press kit video and the 1999 DVD promo trailers for the 1999 DVD and the 2009 Blu-ray (that appeared on other Sony DVDs and Blu-rays at the respective times).

Also note that the Alternate Takes for the first film are no longer on the disc; likely because they're part of the full TV Cut! That's fine with me because the were always presented out of order, which bugged me. Finally, the set will include a few new exclusive Ghostbusters: Afterlife special features: "Jason's Sneak Peek from Set" and "Theatrical Trailers". I don't know what the former is, but I'm glad that we're getting the movie advertising; hopefully ALL three trailers and the teaser, if not also the International trailers. The TV Spots would be nice, too, but at least we're getting the trailers.

Sadly, The Real Ghostbusters Pitch Concept Pilot in HD has been removed, making it exclusive to the 2019 set.

Here is the official sizzle reel giving us a glimpse of the special features.

That is all. Stay tuned for reviews come February 2022.

I wanted to ask whether the GB2 in-universe ‘TV Commercial’ will be included on the set? I really enjoyed seeing it on the 2019 steelbook set and wondered if this ultimate collection will infact include it.
