Ghostbusters II - How Much Is That Casper In The Window? (It's $3.99)

By Paul Rudoff on Jul. 10, 2021 at 8:08 PM , Categories: Ghostbusters 2

It's a well-known fact that Columbia Pictures faced the ire of Harvey Comics over the resemblance of the No Ghost logo ghost to Fatso, a character from Harvey's Casper, the Friendly Ghost series. The matter was eventually dropped when the courts ruled that the logo ghost was a generic depiction of a ghost. In an ironic twist, both Casper and the Ghostbusters exist in each other's universes. Read on to find out more...

During the "We're Back" montage, the guys are seen wearing Santa hats while coming out of the Record Explosion store at 2 Broadway. Several "Children's Videos" VHS tapes and Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) console, accessories, and games can be seen in the store windows. Six years ago, I identified most of the NES stuff, and gave a cursory mention of a few of the Public Domain tapes. Thanks to Matthew Jordan, I can now give a more complete look at what Record Explosion was selling in late 1988.

I have assigned numbers from 1 through 31 to each item.

Many of the Public Domain VHS were released by United American Video Corporation, mostly through their "FunTime Kid Video", "Kids Great Kids", and "Great American Cartoons" labels. They feature theatrical shorts from the 1930s through 1950s. Two of the tapes contain Casper, the Friendly Ghost film shorts. This means that Casper, as filmed entertainment, exists in the Ghostbusters universe. Conversely, thanks to Dan Aykroyd's cameo as Ray Stantz in the live-action 1995 Casper theatrical film, the Ghostbusters exist as real people in the Casper universe.

All of the video game information listed below is for the United States releases. Click on an item name to view the cover artwork. Credits for the IDs and photos can be found at the end.

This was a controller for the NES that allowed the gamer to use a joystick instead of a D-pad. While the Advantage was designed after the NES controller, it added various features for a more challenging experience. It featured two "turbo" knobs along with a "slow" button and the option to play with one or two players.
• Ray Stantz used this controller to pilot Lady Liberty at the end of Ghostbusters II.

31. Nintendo Entertainment System Action Set (released in November 1988 by Nintendo for $149.99) (Buy at Amazon)
This was a console bundle that included an NES Control Deck with the Zapper light gun (initially available in grey, later replaced with the orange model in later versions of the bundle), two controllers, and the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt double game pak. It was the most popular NES console bundle, resulting in the proliferation of Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt game paks compared to the stand-alone versions of both games.

There are some things that you, dear readers, can help us with:

#1 is Educational Favorites: Learning Your Letters by Trans-Atlantic Video. We need a photo of the “red apple” cover seen in the movie. Later released with a cover photo of a girl writing on a blackboard with the rest of the case in blue.

#7 is definitely a Little Lulu tape from Funtime Kid Video, as it has their header, and uses their drawing of Little Lulu. However, we can’t find one on a yellow background. We’d love to get 100% confirmation on what the name of the tape with the yellow background is, and have an image of it. The runtime and list of shorts would be good, too.

#20 is “The Best of Shirley Temple” from Family Classics. We’d love to get a better image and more information about it. A back cover would be nice, to give use the studio, runtime, UPC, and list of shorts contained on the tape.
