Spook Central - Disc Preservation Project

The Spook Central VIP Exclusives Area is the home to content that has been made exclusively available for supporters who pledge a monthly donation through the Spook Central Patreon page. Said content is either downloadable through the VIP Exclusives Area here or on the Patreon page, though I link to some exclusive content throughout Spook Central where appropriate. You can learn more about the Spook Central VIP Area in this blog post. The VIP articles that are posted on Spook Central, which are easily distinguishable by the "[VIP]" at the start of the article title, are readable by all visitors, but contain download links that will only work for VIP members. If you wish to download this content, become a supporter through the Spook Central Patreon page. With that out of the way, let's continue...

For many years, Spook Central has spearheaded the Ghostbusters PDF eBook Preservation Project, an effort among fans to preserve out-of-print Ghostbusters books so that pieces of the franchise's history are available to all, and are not lost to time, or held hostage by price-gouging aftermarket sellers. Thanks to the gracious amount of webspace provided by Raffaele, Spook Central is able to do the same with selected fan-made and promotional digital disc content. I have a few discs that are suitable for the Disc Preservation Project, though if the primary content from them ends up on an official, commercially-available, easy-to-obtain Blu-ray/DVD/whatever, then I won't include it in the project (or will remove it if it's already been included). This is about preservation, not piracy.

Originally, the plan was to make .ISO images files available, which could be downloaded and burned onto DVD-R discs, which would give you an exact copy of the original DVD. However, even with the gracious amount of webspace provided to Spook Central, I find that that may not be completely feasible in the long-term. Most of the disc images are 4GB each, and that adds up pretty quickly. Also, some people may not be able to to download files that large. There's also the concern that there may not be many dinosaurs like me left, who would prefer a "physical disc"-suitable file. With all of that in mind, I felt that the best thing for the project is to proceed with DVD-ripped .MKV video files of selected content from each disc. These files would have the same quality as the video on the disc (I won't recompress them), but they could be immediately played without the need to burn a disc or mount an image file. Anyone who does want the .ISO image files for all of the discs in the project, can buy the limited-edition physical flash drive release, which is a copy of my master flash drive for the small amount of people who may want those files.

In the Summer of 2019, Sony released both Ghostbusters films in a five-disc 4K UHD & Blu-Ray set (buy it here), with a wealth of bonus materials. Way back in 1989, the Criterion Collection released the first film on laserdisc and, for the first time, there were bonus features with it. While some material from the laserdisc appears on the 4K/Blu set, after thirty years, there is still material that is exclusive to the laserdisc.

I'm getting a little ahead of myself. Let's set the time circuits for January 14, 2005. My friend Raffaele Ruffaldi, who generously provides Spook Central with its webhosting, was annoyed that very little from the laserdisc was included on the DVD that Columbia/TriStar Home Video released in 1999 - even though both releases were worked on by many of the same people. He knew that the "laserdisc exclusive" content should be preserved in the then-current DVD format, which held vast improvements over the original laserdisc format. He painstakingly transferred all of the exclusive content from his copy of the laserdisc, fixed it up as best as he could, and authored it onto a DVD-R that he gave out to only a handful of people. Actually, I may have the only other copy; I'm not really sure.

Here we are over a decade later, and although more content from that laserdisc has (finally) been included in the official Sony release, there is still much that is not. I feel that until such time that everything from the laserdisc is on the latest "thing", there is still a need for fans to have a copy. So, with Raffaele's permission, I am proud to make it available to all of you.

Raffaele's DVD contains all of the laserdisc's bonus material, except for the "making of" featurette and the theatrical trailer (which are both on the 4K/Blu set).
  • Original Teaser
  • Nobel Prize Aspirations Deleted Scene
  • Special Effects (stills) (some video)
  • Trivia (stills)
  • Storyboards (stills)
  • Screenplay (stills)
  • Insider Notes (stills)
  • Improvisation (stills)
  • Additional Materials: Welcome Letter & Jacket Scans
  • Credits & Legal
The Library Ghost SFX Comparison and Ruth Oliver's Scream Test are under "Special Effects - Library Ghost". The Ballroom SFX Comparison is under "Special Effects - Slimer/Onionhead". Raffaele added English subtitles, but they contain some errors. He should have let the native English speaker do them :-) The DVD-ROM portion of the disc image contains all of the source files and some extras.

The Original Teaser has since been added to the 4K/Blu set, where it is in true HD widescreen and higher quality than what is on this disc. Also, this is the original source for the "Nobel Prize Aspirations" deleted scene that I provided to Sony for the 4K/Blu set. They took the 4:3 letterbox copy here, cropped off some of the black bars at the top and bottom, and upscaled it to 1920x1080.

So, going through what's left, there are a few videos and a lot of still images for you to download. The zip file with the stills is 122 MB, and the zip file with the videos is 150 MB. Both can be downloaded from the link below. The videos zip file includes the following files (with optional subtitles): Nobel Prize Aspirations Deleted Scene (0:27), Ruth Oliver's Scream Test (1:26), The Library Ghost SFX Comparison (0:20), and The Ballroom SFX Comparison (0:45). The two SFX comparisons have two audio tracks, one pre-effects and one final.
