Welcome to Spook Central's continuing Return of Shot on Site Summer event wherein we take a look at all of the filming locations for Paul Feig's 2016 Ghostbusters (aka Ghostbusters: Answer The Call). Every Sunday - henceforth dubbed Shot on Site Sundays - at Noon (Eastern) for several weeks (all parts available here in reverse order), we will go through the entire movie from start to finish telling and showing you where everything was filmed in or around Boston, Massachusetts; with a great deal of quick shots in Manhattan, New York; and one spot in Los Angeles, California. We will be utilizing the Theatrical and Extended cuts of the movie from the Blu-ray, as that provides the most locations than just the Theatrical Cut alone. With that in mind, SPOILER WARNING if you read any further... though I suspect that whomever wants to see the movie already has, and those who want to avoid it won't care. Those in the latter camp have probably stopped reading this post already. That's cool. There's lots of material on Spook Central about the original movies and animated series for you to look at.

The majority of locations were identified and researched by Matthew Jordan back in 2016, way before anyone else did it. Secondary thanks go to all of the fine folks on the internet who documented the filming of the movie in 2015, which helped in Matt's research. A few locations were identified by me (Paul Rudoff) and MrMichaelT. The title graphic seen at the top was created by Matthew Jordan, based on an idea by Paul Rudoff. Now that that's out of the way, let us continue...

The cops, of course! Here they are racing to the scenes of the ghostly encounters.

This shot actually appeared in the trailer teaser. Not a "teaser trailer", but the video back in February 2016 that was a teaser FOR the first trailer. The ghosts effects were not in it, of course. Anyway, it's at 225 Franklin Street in Boston. The shot that follows in the movie, of the woman being chased by the ghosts, is the same spot.

A cheeky little ghost unzips his overcoat and flashes his junk.

Image

This is right behind the previous shots. He standing on Oliver Street outside 265 Franklin Street in Boston, looking toward the intersection with Franklin. Below the real-life photo are two on-set photos taken during filming.

A pretty lady sees ghost rats coming out of the 50th Street subway entrance.

Image

This fake subway entrance was placed outside 125 High Street in Boston. That spot would be used later for a crowd shot exclusive to the theatrical cut. By the way, the pretty lady is Milana Vayntrub, best known as Lily Adams in a series of AT&T commercials at the time.

Erin runs down an alley to the street in order to hail a cab.

Image

Image

The alley is actually Hawes Street in Boston, and she runs up to Kilby Street, which the cab is driving down (toward Liberty Square). Due to the different camera lenses used, the buildings in the background seem a little closer than they are on Google Maps.

Abby, Jillian, and Patty race in Ecto-1 to the Mercado.

Image

It's a night shot, so it's hard to see that they go beneath an underpass. The lit-up decorations tell us that this is Chinatown. There also a blue "Park" sign on the left in the background that helps us know this is around 66 to 68 Broadway in Manhattan, looking in the opposite direction from the earlier daytime shot filmed here.

The car continues on its merry way, passing by a bank and parking garage.

Image

Another one that was hard due to being a night shot. It's in front of 1745 Broadway in Manhattan, looking down towards West 55th Street. The key things to note is the bank on the right, the blue "Park" sign, and the red awning for the Applejack diner in the background on the right.

More driving, driving, driving...

Image

A quick cut brings us a different location. The "W. 38th St." sign in the movie helps a lot here, as do the store signs. The location is at 572 8th Avenue in Manhattan, at the intersection with West 38th Street, which Ecto-1 turns on to.

Eventually, the crew reaches a hot dog cart roadblock. Perhaps an ambush, they meet up with Slimer, who promptly hijacks their car.

Image

Image

The roadblock is in front of 22 Batterymarch Street in Boston. A sign hanging on a building on the right says "Dobins Square" in the movie, but reads "Liberty Square" in real life. Slimer backs up the car to Water Street. If he kept going, he'd meet up with the cabbie and/or run over Erin in the "alley". He charges through the roadblock and passes Milk Street while hitting some lamp posts. The building on the right of this other shot has a blue awning that reads "Travers Hospital Medical Group, Otavia Health" in the movie and "Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, Atrius Health" in real life.

How many speeding tickets does Slimer get? Where, exactly, is he going anyway? Does he pick up any ghost hookers along the way? Find out next week - same ghost time, same ghost channel - when we continue our look at the filming locations from Ghostbusters (2016).
