Mass Hysteria! ...Coming soon Via IDW

PermalinkBy Matthew Jordan on Nov. 14, 2013 at 4:33 PM , Categories: Books

IDW has over the last week started leaking out tidbits about the new Arc called "Mass Hysteria!". Among the details known is that it is a eight parter that starts up after (Volume 2) Issue #13. It will begin in February of 2014.

Among the first things one can notice from the second tease that includes a gang of Ghostbusters battle a octopus type monster is that both the original team and the "new" team are in it. However, it also includes the three nice ladies from the Ghost Smashers and the Rookie.

Other notes... Erik Burnham is teasing that 'there may be a return of an accountant' meaning perhaps Louis Tully is not restricted from the comic series anymore. He also notes that the shorts on the ladies is not planned for the story arc and maybe the artist was going by the cover art to (Vol 2) #1. (Thanks Mrmichaelt for passing this along!)

New Year, New Post-Hurricane Updates

Updated on January 22, 2013

This photo shows some of the unsalvageable flood-damaged Ghostbusters-related items lying on the floor of my old house. Going from left to right, we see:

  • Nearly 50 copies of IDW's Ghostbusters #9 comic book. You see the Winston covers, but the other covers got ruined, too.

  • All four of the Titan Book TPB reprints of the old Marvel UK Real Ghostbusters comic books - "Who You Gonna Call?", "Which Witch Is Which", "This Ghost Is Toast", and "A Hard Days Fright".

  • A factory-sealed copy of the original Steelbook edition of TimeLife's The Real Ghostbusters: Complete Collection DVD box set. You can see the top and bottom halves of the firehouse box, which is now falling apart. The still-sealed Steelbook volumes are in between the box halves.

  • Ghostbusters: Ghost Busted (TokyoPop manga TPB).

Hiding there near the middle right side (just above the "A Hard Days Fright" book) is the back of a No Ghost logo t-shirt tag (black square with white circle on it). The shirt's fine, but the paper tag obviously isn't.

If It Doesn't Snow On Christmas

Unusual Holiday Songs

As some of you may know, every year in December I post an unusual holiday song on the Spook Central blog. Well, I'm not gonna let one bitch of a storm prevent me from continuing with the tradition.

I have a small surplus of unusual holiday songs on my computer from which to choose each year, but obviously I don't have access to that data for the time being. While I don't remember all of the songs, I do remember one of them. Luckily, the always awesome Matthew Jordan found me the MP3s online so that I'm able to make my usual Unusual Holiday Song post as usual. Thanks also to Raffaele Ruffaldi for helping out by uploading the MP3s.

Actors who also sing are not an uncommon thing. Heck, it's damn near a requirement if you want to be a tween star on the Disney Channel. Sometimes actors sing well (Anne Hathaway is a good recent example) and sometimes they don't (see Don Johnson, whose singing career is still looking for a heartbeat). Today we discuss an actor who falls into the latter category.

Joe Pesci, best known for his roles in Home Alone and Goodfellas, released an album in 1998 entitled "Vincent Laguardia Gambini Sings Just for You". If you don't recognize the name in the album title, then you've probably never seen the film My Cousin Vinny.

The album, which is available in Explicit and Clean versions, includes a variety of songs that Pesci sings in-character. One of those songs is called "If It Doesn't Snow On Christmas", in which the singer waxes philosophically about how problematic it might be for Santa to deliver presents if there isn't any snow on Christmas.

Below are the "clean" and "explicit" versions of the song. The explicit version has lots of forced profanity that really doesn't fit in the song. It doesn't even sound natural either, which makes that version a pain to listen to. I'd suggest sticking with the clean version.

Now this is where I normally would have ended this post, but thanks to some research done by the incomparable Matthew Jordan, I learned that this song has a little history.

You see, the only versions of "If It Doesn't Snow On Christmas" I've ever heard were the ones Joe Pesci sang, so I thought it was written specifically for his album. It turns out that the song was originally sung by the singing cowboy himself, Gene Autry, with his group The Pinafores way back in 1949. The song was the b-side to Autry's hit single "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (maybe you've heard of it) and was written by Rudolph composer Johnny Marks, along with Milton Pascal.

Update on Paul "Good News!"

Updated on December 31, 2012

Hi Everyone

Good news! My family and I are no longer living at the Red Cross emergency shelter at Nassau Community College. We spent six grueling weeks there, and we left nearly exactly to the day and time we arrived. We entered on Monday October 29th at 11:00-11:30 AM, and we left on Monday December 10th at roughly 11:00 AM.

We're now living in a small two-family house in Valley Stream - which is just two towns away from East Rockaway. The house is surrounded by parking lots - there's no front yard, no backyard, no grass to be seen anywhere! It's the only house on the block. On the other side of the block are the backs of the houses from the condominium complex on the next block over.

For previous updates, please see the "Spook Central On Hiatus / Making Ghostbusters PDF eBook Preserved" blog post.

This blog post contains the next set of updates. The last blog got way too crowded and so I got approval to start a second blog post. To keep things simple and to the point, I'll be simply copying and relaying Paul Rudoff's comments and news here on this blog post. - Matthew Jordan
