Spook Central Halloween Treat - Unusual Ghostbusters Songs, Volume 1

Halloween Treats

This year's Halloween Treat will be a musical feature, showcasing ten unusual or unique (or just plain weird) Ghostbusters songs. Some songs will be good, some will be bad, some will in the middle, and some will be "so bad they're good". There is no criteria for quality here. Just what I find "interesting". No songs will be taken from any official Ghostbusters albums. I'll call this "Volume 1" because there will likely be more in a future Halloween Treat post.

Bob Baldwin - On Our Own (1990) - A smooth jazz near-instrumental cover of the Bobby Brown hit. From the album Rejoice. Check out the CD Single Artwork.

Peter Breiner - Ghostbusters (1991) - An orchestral version of Ghostbusters performed with Peter on the piano. From the album Peter Breiner & His Symphonic Pop Orchestra - Unchained Melody.

The Broadway Kids - Ghostbusters (1997) - It's as if the Junior Ghostbusters sang the song, only WAY better and with sound effects. Definitely a great rendition and kinda adorable. From the album The Broadway Kids - At The Movies (alt url). Performed by Ariel Harris Osumenya, Christopher Mark Petrizzo, Erin Rakow, Pierce Cravens, Amy Braverman, Travis Jordan Greisler, Ashley Pettet, Nicholas Gould, Christy Carlson Romano (later to star in Even Stevens & Kim Possible), Michael Zeidman, Jack Ingram, and Eden Reigel (later to star in The Young and the Restless); with "Broadway Guests" Ashley Tisdale (later to star in High School Musical & Suite Life of Zack and Cody), Kelly Mady, Jackie Angelescu, Brandon Ngai, Kristen Pettet, Jacy DeFillipo, Laurissa Auble, Renee Braithwaite, Kai Braithwaite, Olivia Oguma, Chris Truesdale, Alexis Kalehoff, Craig Lawlor, Alex Strange, and Kenji Miyata. CD liner notes (exactly as is written in the CD booklet, spelling and grammatical errors intact): "In addition to the opening and closing credits, Ray Parker, Jr.'s Oscar nominated song GHOSTBUSTERS covers a long and amusing montage. We see the exploits of Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Dr. Raymond Stantz (Dan Ackroyd), and Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) as they battle a sudden outbreak of ghouls and goblins. The tune is just one of the reasons that this Ivan Reitman's 1984 film was such a smash."

Unknown - Ghostbusters (1998) - Without a doubt, this is the second worst rendition of Ghostbusters ever commercially released. From the album My Favorite Lullabies: To Sir With Love. Yes, you read that right. Ghostbusters is on a CD entitled "My Favorite Lullabies" even though it is clearly NOT a lullaby. Heck, eleven of the twelve songs on the CD are not lullabies: 01. To Sir With Love, 02. Wouldn't It Be Lovely, 03. Who's Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf?, 04. The Ballad Of Davy Crockett, 05. Shake Your Paw, 06. Do The Bartman, 07. Ninja Rap, 08. Batdance, 09. Here Comes Garfield, 10. Ghostbusters, 11. A Spoonful Of Sugar, 12. Rock A Bye Baby.

The Hit Crew - Ghostbusters (2003) - Absolutely horrible. It should come as no surprise that it's from the album Drew's Famous: Kids Halloween Movie Themes, which is one of those lame party CDs that come out every year around Halloween time.

Bowling For Soup - Ghostbusters (2005) - A rockin' cover from the Just Like Heaven soundtrack album. Mp3 provided by Demon Lord Etna.

Mistah F.A.B. - Ghost Ride It (2007) - This controversial rap from the album Yellow Bus Rydah (later Crack Baby Anthem) samples "Ghostbusters" The Director's Cut music video (alt url) features an Ecto-1 replica and Slimer drawn on the back of a jacket. It's also in the TV Version. Check out some Behind The Scenes information. For more information, check out Proton Charging. Columbia Pictures threatened legal action against Mistah F.A.B. for the use of the Ghostbusters car and logo in the music video, and the song samples. I don't know what the outcome of the matter was. More info on it can be found here and here.

Dave Thomas - EctoMix (Ghostbusters Remix) (2008) - A super-cool fan remix of Ghostbusters dialog samples backed with a syncopated beat. Be sure to watch the music video (alt url).

Jon Herchert - Ghostbusters (2011) - A decent cover, though nothing remarkable. From the album Monster Mash: Party Songs For Kids.

J-Mi - Scared On His Own (Who's He Gonna Call) (2014) - An awesome mash-up of "Ghostbusters", "On Our Own", and movie samples over Bruce Arntson and Kirby Shelstad's theme to Ernest Scared Stupid (1991). Be sure to watch the movie's cool opening title sequence, then buy it on Blu-ray and DVD (and triple and quadruple feature DVDs).

Spook Central Halloween Treat - Ghostbusters Coloring Pages

Halloween Treats

It was never meant to be a regular thing. I'm kinda surprised that it still is.

Several lifetimes ago, way back in 2012, Matt and I planned Spook Central's first "Halloween Treat": the Making Ghostbusters PDF. It was actually posted a week after Halloween, but even that was quite a feat considering that I was living in a Red Cross emergency shelter due to Hurricane Sandy evicting me from my home just a few days before Halloween. Matt worked with Raffaele (my friend who provides Spook Central's webhosting) to get the treat out there in my absence.

It was going to be a one-off "treat", and certainly not something that would continue every year...and yet it has. There's been a Halloween Treat here on Spook Central in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Heck, it has even spread to Spook Central's sister site, The Corner Penthouse, in 2014 and 2015.

This year's Halloween Treat is a set of 11 Ghostbusters coloring pages, courtesy of the Circle City Ghostbusters, in a partial collaboration with Spook Central. Six pages use artwork from Spook Central's Real Ghostbusters Production Artwork page, while the other four feature original artwork by CCGB member Jacob Bartlett, who provided me with these pages (and one by Alex of the CCGBs).

If you are looking for more Ghostbusters coloring fun, download the Ghostbusters II Coloring Book PDF here on Spook Central. Those of you who like the new Ghostbusters movie can download a PDF coloring book featuring a drawing of that team, and other female squads at SheKnows.com.

Spook Central Halloween Treat - Dan Aykroyd & Bill Murray Team Up With Spider-Man

Halloween Treats

This year's Halloween Treat is really special because it's not, specifically, Ghostbusters-related. It does feature two stars of Ghostbusters: Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray.

Thirty-seven years ago, long before there was a Marvel Cinematic Universe where everyone was teaming up with everyone else, there was a comic book series titled "Marvel Team-Up". As you would expect from that name, it featured collaborations between different characters in the Marvel canon. What you wouldn't expect, however, is that issue #74 featured Marvel regular, Spider-Man, teaming up with Saturday Night Live's Not-Ready-For-Primetime-Players. Yeah, Peter Parker and Mary Jane shared the stage with Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Bill Murray, Laraine Newman, Gilda Radner, and Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels. Oh, and Stan Lee even makes his usual cameo appearance, long before that would be his usual thing.

I, honestly, have no idea what prompted this rather unusual cross-over. Saturday Night Live was three-years-old at the time and was pretty popular, but it would be another five months before they would spoof superheroes with the now-classic Superhero Party sketch (aired on March 17, 1979 with host Margot Kidder). I guess the folks at Marvel were just big SNL fans.

Sadly, this issue has never been published again since October 1978. When Marvel reprinted Marvel Team-Up issues #52 through #75 in Essential Marvel Team-Up, Vol. 3 (ISBN 978-0785130680), it was not included because they don't own the rights to the Saturday Night Live property, and either NBC didn't want to play ball, or there were issues with the likeness rights of the individual actors. What ever the case may be, I carefully scanned in my personal copy, and I'm sharing it so everyone can enjoy this classic craziness. Super big thanks to Matthew Jordan for cleaning-up the pages so they look even better than the actual 37-year-old book. Click on the cover to download the PDF.

Spook Central Halloween Treat - Early Ghostbusters II Script & More

PermalinkBy Paul Rudoff on Oct. 31, 2014 at 12:00 PM , Categories: Spook Central, Ghostbusters 1, Ghostbusters 2, Home Video, Books , Tags: halloween_treat
Halloween Treats

For the past few years, Spook Central presented a Halloween treat to the community in the form of a special eBook PDF. It was never intended to be a regular tradition, but it's turned out to be that way. Whether it stays that way...who knows.

This year, Spook Central continues the new tradition with TWO eBooks. The first one is something small, and not of any consequence, but it's here for you anyway. On the Ghostbusters Books page is the Ghostbusters Theatrical Program Book (it's the first item on the page). This 8.5x11 color program book/booklet, printed on hard card stock, was given out to audience members at premiere theatrical showings of "Ghostbusters" back in 1984. It features the title logo across the front cover; the full credits across the two inside pages; and the Columbia Pictures logo, title logo, and credits block on the back cover. If you want to buy the original, for your Ghostbusters or movie memorabilia collection, I currently have it up for sale on eBay.

The second Halloween treat is a MAJOR addition to the site and is an absolute rarity: the Ghostbusters II August 5, 1988 script draft!!! This draft is wildly different than the final film. There is no Slimer, Dana, Janosz, River of Slime, Vigo painting, or Ghost Jogger. New characters Lane Walker and Jalmar Litvinov would, in essence, become Dana and Janosz later on. Instead of the Vigo painting, the vessel of evil is a religious Icon triptych held by Jalmar. Vigo, who's Russian here, commandeers the Statue of Liberty and chases the Ghostbusters through the city streets at the film's climax. Oscar is possessed by Vigo and moves like an adult with an adult's gaze. The vehicle which we know as "Ecto-1A" is referred to as "Ecto-1". And that's just the tip of the iceberg of the differences in this draft. It truly feels like an alternate universe - but without the turtles. Major thanks to Matthew Jordan for helping me clean up the scanned pages. (Side note, the Ghostbusters II 11/27/1988 draft was not ready at press time and will be uploaded at a later date.)

If you're truly a Ghostbusters or movie memorabilia collector, you can buy the ORIGINAL PRODUCTION-USED copies of the August 5th and November 27th, 1988 scripts from my personal collection. Both come with COAs from Tim Lawrence, creature shop supervisor. I have them both up on eBay, but U.S. collectors can buy them now through PayPal using the links below. International buyers either need to buy through eBay or e-mail me with your address so I can look up shipping costs. There are reserves on eBay ($550 for 8/5, $400 for 11/27), so buying through PayPal would be preferable for both of us.

$550 - Ghostbusters II August 5, 1988 Original Production-Used Movie Script (photos) - PayPal (U.S. Only), eBay
$400 - Ghostbusters II Nov. 27, 1988 Original Production-Used Movie Script (photos) - PayPal (U.S. Only), eBay

I may, eventually, sell the rest of my Ghostbusters movie and TV scripts, but for now, only the two original production-used Ghostbusters II movie scripts are being sold. I'm selling my scripts because I *really* need the money. Money has been very tight since my father passed away earlier this year.

Anyway, a THIRD Halloween eBook treat is available if you visit my new second site/blog. The premiere post on that site will treat you to the Beetlejuice: Beginner's Guide To Seeing Ghosts theatrical promo booklet. This new site/blog will also be the home to a whole series of non-Ghostbusters Filming Locations/Shot On Site articles. If you enjoyed Spook Central Shot On Site articles, you might want to stay tuned to my other site for more of the same.

Finally, here are the winners of Spook Central's Halloween Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary Blu-Ray Raffle:

* Kevin H., Salem MA
* Sean B., Phoenix AZ
* Steven L., Los Angeles CA
* Laura S., New Orleans, LA
* Katie M., New York, NY

We're Back - Spook Central Reopening / Spook Central Halloween Treat - Ghostbusters II Novel PDF eBook

See, even Janine is thrilled - and she doesn't excite easily... unless Egon is around.

It was pretty much a year ago that Spook Central was put into a hiatus state due to Hurricane Sandy, and I feel that it's time it was brought back to life MWAHAHAHA! Even though I'm not where I should be in regards to having a new computer, all of the new Spook Central staff are capable of posting to the site, so there's no reason that the site needs to stay dormant (or be relegated to just hurricane-related posts) just because of me.

Yes, Spook Central now has a staff.

Staff of Ra

No, not that staff. THIS staff: Matthew Jordan, Raffaele Ruffaldi, and Doreen Mulman. All are long-time, respected members of the Ghostbusters online community whom I've been friends with for quite a while, and who have helped me and Spook Central over the years. You can read more about them on the Spook Central Staff page.

All three of these fine young eggs will post articles here or on the Spook Central Facebook page as often or as little as they feel the need to. Pre-hurricane, I certainly wasn't making daily posts. Heck, I wasn't necessarily making weekly posts, either. Even if any of them posts once a month, or once every few months, it'll be a lot more often than I have this past year.

In fact, if you've been regularly visiting the Spook Central Facebook page over the past year, you would have already seen a lot of posts from Matthew about the IDW comic book series, and all of the latest important happenings in the world of Ghostbusters. The Spook Central Facebook page WILL have more activity than this blog because there are some things more suited to Facebook than the blog. So if you're not following the Spook Central Facebook page you're missing out on a lot of cool stuff!

I can't promise you that you'll start seeing new Ghostbusters content starting tomorrow. Right now Matthew and Doreen have their own computer problems that they need to take care of before they can begin writing articles here. That said, I felt that it was about time I officially opened the door, so when we each have our issues resolved, we can walk right in and give you the Ghostbusters goodness you've come to know and love from Spook Central since August 1996.

As of right now, there shouldn't be any more Hurricane Sandy-related posts from me, though I will update the Salvaging Project, Computer Recovery, and East Rockaway House posts as needed until each of those matters are finished with. For the time being, you'll find links to all of the hurricane stuff in the small infobox near the top right corner of this blog.

Halloween Treats

When Spook Central was put into a hiatus state a year ago, the last Ghostbusters "thing" added to the site was the Making Ghostbusters eBook PDF. It was meant to go up on Halloween 2012 as a special treat, but the hurricane had other plans. It ended up being added to the site in my absence a week later. Thankfully, this year's Halloween treat eBook PDF *IS* being given out on Halloween...and here it is:

Ghostbusters II Novel

As part of the Ghostbusters PDF eBook Preservation Project, the Ghostbusters II novel by Ed Naha has been preserved and can be found on the Ghostbusters II Books page. Major thanks to Matthew Jordan for scanning in the book, cleaning it up, and making the digital preservation possible - especially in light of the computer problems he's been having lately. A gallery of the book's images can be found on the Spook Central Facebook page.
