Ghostbusters 1 & 2 Unidentified Filming Locations

This page will serve as a checklist of the Ghostbusters 1 & 2 filming locations that still need to be identified. I tried to put up some images that are representative of the location, so they could be used for identification purposes. Click on them to view the full-size Blu-ray framegrab. If you've identified a location, be sure to send me an e-mail so that I can research it and, if it checks out, add it to the site. I'll need a street address, and any proof images and information you may have.

WHAT YOU WON'T FIND ON THIS PAGE: Locations that have already been identified, are known to be sets, are believed to be sets, and New York City skyline shots.

Ghostbusters

Location #1 - 1:09:55 - More of the wandering Louis. I doubt that there's anything in this shot that could be used to ID it - all we have is a street sign pole with a bicycle chain around it - but I figured I'd put it on this page just to be complete. At some point it'll probably get removed from the page.

Location #2 - 1:10:45 - Don Shay's book "Making Ghostbusters" tell us that "the incarceration scene was shot on location at an actual New York prison facility, now out of commission and essentially abandoned. The lock-up was just a terrible place to shoot. It was dark and very crowded, with low ceilings and dirt everywhere." So this is not a set, but a real place that was no longer in use as a prison back in 1983, when the movie was filming in New York. Anyone have a clue what decommissioned prison this might be? Anyone have the unfortunate luck of being a resident here (or a worker) when it was still in use?

Ghostbusters II

Location #3 - 0:10:53 - This is the offices of the television studio at which Peter films "World of the Psychic". The "World of the Psychic" set is, indeed, a set. My gut feeling is that this is a set as well, but it seems like such an awfully elaborate set (multiple cubicles, all of the real tv show photos on the walls, etc.) for such a quick scene. Maybe they filmed it in one of the offices at the Warner Studios were they did all of the soundstage work. So I figured that I'd add it to the page anyway, just in case.

Location #4 - 0:36:52 - During the "We're Back" montage we see this shot. It's very reminiscent of the first shot filmed for the first movie of the three guys running down a crowded street towards the camera - only this time including Winston. Just like with that shot, there really isn't any identifying details in the image. Maybe some part of the background looks familiar to you. (We believe that this may have been filmed on East 57th Street, down the block from Orrefors, in connection with a promo photo that shows Dalva Brothers and the awning for JW Weston; both of which are a few stores down from Orrefors. However, we lack concrete proof to say this.)

Location #5 - 1:20:16 - During the "Flip City" montage we see this shot. A squad room full of cops. Probably a set since it's only seen in one sweeping shot across the room, but it could just as easily be a real place.

Location #6 - 1:22:37 - The guys are sprung from Parkview and make their way through a long hallway to freedom. Although the "Parkview Hospital, Psychiatic Unit" sign in the first image was put there by the film crew, all of the other signage on the walls appears to be legit. Which indicates to me that this shot was filmed inside an actual hospital - undoubtedly one in California. But which one? When the guys turn the corner, we can see a sign on the double swinging doors they go through that reads, "Volunteer Department, Patient Free Library - Public Entitlement Program". The blue sign on the other door reads "X-Ray Department". So whatever hospital is it, they're heading out through its library or it's x-ray/radiology department. It's not a set as it has a ceiling, but where is it? It's very possible that it's the VA Hospital where the Parkview exteriors were filmed, but we have no concrete proof at this point.

Likely identified by this text from the book, "Ghostbusters: The Ultimate Visual History" by Daniel Wallace (on page 151): One additional scene occurred at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center. This would serve as New York's fictional Parkview Psychiatric Hospital, where straitjacketed ghostbusters are incarcerated thanks to the meddling of the mayor's aide. "The interiors were set at the VA Medical Center in Brentwood," says [art director Tom] Duffield. "When they're coming out of the mental hospital in their ghostbusters uniforms, that was shot at a side door service entrance of the Biltmore Hotel."

Location #7 - 1:41:25 - One of the shots of the guys during the end credits. I doubt that there's anything in this shot that could be used to ID it - it's just a sea of cars - but I figured I'd put it on this page just to be complete. At some point it'll probably get removed from the page. (We believe that this may have been filmed on East 57th Street, down the block from Orrefors, in connection with a promo photo that shows Dalva Brothers and the awning for JW Weston; both of which are a few stores down from Orrefors. However, we lack concrete proof to say this.)
